Kosovo, Montenegro and Romania among the countries supporting Budapest Pride

This year’s Budapest Pride will take place on Saturday, 23 July. Pride Month commemorates years of struggle for civil rights and the ongoing pursuit of equal justice under the law for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community. This year, 42 countries are supporting Budapest Pride.

Declaration of support

The declaration, issued jointly by 42 embassies on Monday, begins:

“On the occasion of the 27th Budapest Pride Festival, we, the following embassies and cultural institutions, pledge our full support to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI+) community. We stand up for their right to equality and non-discrimination, freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, and to be free from violence.”

They recognise the work of LGBTQI+ grassroots human rights activists, journalists, media workers and civil society organisations to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or gender characteristics, are treated equally and protected by the law. The rule of law and respect for universal human rights are the foundations of democratic states, they add.
